Hey, are ya'll aware that today is free scoop day at Ben & Jerry's?  I advise you to take advantage of that - I sure did.

    In other news...

Ruth, I just had a weird flashback thing to standing in some Walmart parking lot with Jennifer, Shaun, and Andrew.  I think it might have been during the time you left us for a couple days... were you around when we got those light sabers?
    11:00 am
    Things.
-Yesterday I suffered a paper cut from a manila folder.  Today it's itching like crazy.

-I'm three episodes in on the 4th season of The Sopranos.  It's good to be back with the family.

-My hair is down today and driving me crazy.

-Auditioned for a theater company last night.  Olga and I did our True West scene for them.  Fun.

-Went to a goodbye party on Sunday night for a girlfriend who's leaving Hollywood for a bit to do some missions work in South Africa.  It was a FANTASTIC party.  Pretty much like a reunion of all the people we've been in class with.  Only a couple faces missing.  I managed to get three hours of sleep that night... totally worth it.

-Been browsing movie costume websites.  Don't know when I'll have an extra seven grand lying around to throw at a cool reproduction of Satine's red satin gown, but it's fun to think about.  The costume I'd really love to have is Arwen's riding habit though.  THAT is a great costume.  And I'd totally wear it while riding around Placerita Canyon on a tiny pasofino horse while pretending to be chased by the Nazgul.

    -I am a nerd.

-I have not seen any good movies lately.  Soon enough though... soon enough.

So, looks like our biggest client, the client on which we rely for most of our work, may be shutting down and going bankrupt.

    Not good.

We've already had to let a bunch of people go - probably about six in the past seven months or so.  Yikes.  Everyone's been rushing around the office in a panic all day, trying to gather all this client's documents and contracts and everything in the hopes of getting at least SOME of the money they owe us before they go under.

For more reasons than that, today is just really a very not good day.

Shooting two short films this weekend.

Received an email from a girl who sat in on another audition of mine about a month ago.  She's doing a film now and wants me for the lead.

I was having a good time with the acting thing in class already, but it's a totally different story getting outside of that safe environment and having people who don't know you and haven't seen your classwork wanting you to act for them.  It's really encouraging.

There is a homeless man who lives outside the Skylight Theater.  He sleeps against the wall on a thin layer of cardboard and newspaper.  He doesn't have shoes.  He is very thin but doesn't like it when you offer him food.  He never opens his eyes all the way; when his eyes are as open as he'll let them be he appears to either be half-asleep or in some kind of trance.  Whenever I see him he is sleeping or yelling things at passersby.  Many of his outbursts sound like drunken ramblings, many sound prophetic, and all are disturbing.

Once when I walked past him he started laughing, and said, "And she committed suicide in his apartment!  She couldn't even kill herself in her own place!"

And last night when I walked past him he raised his head and looked at me through those slits, and shouted out, "And Jesus said, 'No, you do not have one husband, but five husbands!  And the man you are with is not your husband!' "

Sometimes I see another man who I know lives in the brick building across the street from the theater standing in front of the thin man sitting on the ground.  He stands there and watches him with a bemused expression on his face, as though he's taking in a show.

Had a great callback last night.  If I get this one I'll be playing a comic book nerd.  I don't know the first thing about comic books, but I figured I could transfer my Lord of the Rings/Firefly/Narnia nerdiness into the character.

Auditioning for "Rabbit Hole" on Sunday.  The Izzy part is so great...

Rehearsing a scene from "True West" with Olga this weekend.  Looking forward.

I'm shooting that "Me and You and Everyone We Know" scene next weekend.  Should be fun.

    Acting is neat.

Me and You and Everyone We Know.

The USC thing last night went great.  My scene partner, Christopher, and I arrived at the Robert Zemeckis Center at about a quarter to nine for the directing class, which takes place on a sound stage.  The girl who cast us, Liz, is a student in the directing class, and once we were all ready to go she got up in front of everyone and explained the scene Chris and I were about to do.  After we did the scene, he and I went and waited out in the hall while they... discussed, and after about ten minutes they called us back in and had us run it a few more times.  Didn't really make any major changes, just adjusted some beats and things like that.  The instructor of the class, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0501435/, told us that it was a great scene, and she really didn't have any notes to give us because we were so good and organic each time, and so "in the moment."  Thus ended our evening.

As Liz walked Christopher and I back out to our cars, she thanked us many times for our work and added, "by the way, I've never heard her say anything like that, so, really great job guys!"  We're getting together to shoot the scene in a couple weekends.

I saw "Eve's Bayou" a long time ago when it first came out.  Wish I'd known the identity of this woman before we did the scene!  Come to think of it though, it's probably a lot better that I didn't.

All in all, I'm feeling pretty good about this whole acting thing today.

The following is a message my brother left me a while back.  Rediscovered it in my voicemailbox today.

"Okay I know this is gonna sound crazy, but my name is Sarah Carman, and I'm from the future.  The government captured me and gave me a sex change operation; if you don't run they're gonna do it to you too.  So go.  Run.  Just- just leave the west coast."

Other recent messages I've received from him include one in which he just gave me a huge list of Blazer basketball stats, and a couple raps.  One of them he "composed" on the way home from work.  The other he did after midnight while he was on a beach trip with some friends.

Brothers are great.  Ruth?  You want to back me up on that?  From your stories and mine, it sounds like we both have pretty cool ones.

    11:13 am
Booked the thing for "Me and You and Everyone We Know."  I've yet to meet the guy playing Richard.  He and I will be doing the scene where Richard and Christine are walking to their cars and part ways at the corner.   The way this thing works, I guess, is that he and I will meet with the director for a rehearsal or two, then we'll put the scene up this Monday night in a directing class.  The teacher will critique the director after we perform the scene, and then we, the actors will get notes too.  I think.  :)

Had a great audition last night for a USC short about comic book freaks.  So, so fun.  Would LOVE to get that.  After running the lines I did some improv stuff with the writer, which was very fun and easy to get into.  USC's been good to me, lately...
    9:33 am
On the heels of Ruth's story about babysitting her director's kids...

Yesterday one of my co-workers came up to my desk to chat.  The conversation eventually turned to stories about his son.

Him: Well, he's three now, so pretty much all he wants to talk about is his butt and poop.

Me (laughing): Oh yeah?  Sounds pretty great.

Him: Uh-huh.  His teacher at preschool calls us on a semi-regular basis to tell us that the kid's been using "potty language."  And I'm like, "So?"

    Me: Really?

Him: Yeah, I mean, he doesn't say the really bad words.  Just, you know, "peepee" and "poop" and stuff like that.

Me: Oh.  So actual potty language.

Him:  Yeah.  He probably says "fart" too, because we say that a lot at home.

    Me: Of course.

Him: And lately he's been doing this thing where he pulls his underwear way, way up so his penis hangs out the side, and he just walks up to us, laughing.  He thinks it's pretty entertaining.

    Me: That's hilarious!

Him: Yeah, when he does that I just crack up and my wife gives me, that, you know, that look, and says "Your son!" like I taught him to do that or something, and I'm like, "What are you talking about?  I don't do that!"  But I do laugh pretty hard at him.

Me: So you didn't teach him to do that, but you're encouraging it.

Him: Yep.  Pretty much.  It's hard to discipline him, because he's just so funny.

Anyway, it was a fun mid-afternoon conversation.  Broke up the monotany of the day a bit. I'm thinking that when I have kids (if I have kids, I guess), I'm going to have a really hard time with them.  Mostly because they'll end up doing hilarious things like that and I won't ever be able to get them under control because I'll just laugh at everything they do and end up accidentally encouraging such behavior.

You know what is a completely fantastic in every way movie?  The one that this quote is from:

[Gil sees Justin wearing nothing but a gunbelt]
Gil: That's what you're wearing to bed? You'll catch a cold!
[Justin puts on a cowboy hat]
    Gil: Perfect!

Went over to USC last night pre-concert to audition for a scene from "Me and You and Everyone We Know".  It's for a directing class, and if I'm cast I'll go into the class one evening next week and have people direct me and my scene partner, and then film the scene on a weekend.  Cool, huh?

Going to USC again this Saturday to the Robert Zemeckis Center for an audition for motion/expression capture.  THAT should be fun :)
    9:31 am
    Also...
Finished the first draft of my pilot script.  Had a friend take a look (I need to send it to you too, James, if you don't mind checking it out) and got some very helpful notes.  Back to work for me!  But I'm very happy to have registered it with WGA - I feel a little... safer(?) about it now.
    9:10 am
    The Black Keys + The Wiltern + a gin & tonic + a friend + peanut m&ms = SARAH IS VERY HAPPY

Last night was completely awesome.  My one regret was that I was confined to a chair during the concert, as opposed to all those lucky folks on the ground level that got to stand the whole time and move any which way they wanted!  Impossible to sit still while the Keys are playing.

Only got four hours of sleep but I'm wide awake, happy, and a little heady, perhaps partly due to the slight second-hand high I acquired from the joint that was passed back and forth across our aisle last night.  After the show, AJ and I got lost somewhere in LA - I think we might have wound up in Santa Monica, I have no idea.  During the adventure there was much interesting conversation.  We eventually made it back to his house, where we caught the last half hour or so of Se7en with Troy, Robert, and Olivia.

Again, last night was completely awesome.

    Monday.

This morning on my way to work I found myself at a stoplight behind one car.  Both of us were waiting for the left turn arrow.  When it turned green, the car ahead of me didn't move.  I gave it a few seconds, then lightly tapped my horn.  The driver woke from her reverie and drove on; as she turned she made sure to swivel around in her seat, make eye contact with me, and flip me off.  It was really neat.

Went hiking up Runyon Canyon this weekend.  Nice.  Very pretty up there - good view of L.A.  And I've never seen so many perfectly sculpted bodies in one place before (you're right Ruth - BORING).  Pretty sure I saw Daniel Craig.  Okay, it probably wasn't him, but it looked a lot like him (blonde guy, perfect abs, british accent, sunglasses), so let's just say I saw Daniel Craig.

    I saw Daniel Craig!

On Sunday I drove down to Carlsbad to my aunt and uncle's for Easter dinner.  Ham is great - I'm glad I'm not really Jewish.  Ham, potato salad, baked beans, salad with feta cheese and olives, deviled eggs, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.  The food and family was definitely worth spending four hours in the car yesterday.

Watched the Woody Allen movie "Scoop" before I went down there.  Didn't know what to expect going in, apart from the usual quirky Woody Allen type stuff, and ended up really enjoying it.  Scarlett was fun, Hugh was fun, the movie was just... fun.  Not the best thing every, but definitely not difficult to watch.  Ian McShane has a cool voice, too.  I like Scarlett.

James, have you finised Sopranos 3?  I need to catch up...  The rape episode was the last one I saw, I think.

Had an audition at USC last Thursday.  It was all improv.  Had to shock a guy back to life with an imaginary defibrillator (sp?).  Fun.  Had another audition Saturday afternoon - that went well.  Was over on Theatre Row down on Santa Monica Blvd., in the Complex (same place you and I took that free AIDA class way back when, Ruth).

One of the guys in my class is a writer, and he recently wrote a campy play about super heroes.  He's selected a few people from class to read different characters in a table read this Saturday.  I'm reading for - drumroll please...

    Cyberwench.

Cyberwench is a punky, devil-may-care, half-human, half-machine chick who gets to fight people.  He asked me to read her character after I did a scene from "Dummy" where I played the Milla Jovovich part.  The script is fun - I'm looking forward.

Also looking forward to doing the opening scene from Pulp Fiction next week in class.  Jeremy and I rehearsed it for a couple hours at Mel's Diner on Saturday.  We discussed that it would be cool to pretend to hold up a diner sometime as part of the rehearsal process, but ultimately decided against it.  Mostly because neither of us has enough time to get arrested AND fit in enough rehearsal time for the scene.

    Um... what else...

It's just been a while since I posted, so I feel like there's a lot to catch up on.  But maybe there isn't.

Oh-shot a student film a couple weeks ago.  Going through hair and makeup was interesting.  I don't like the way I turned out, but it's what the director wanted, so, so be it.  My hair was huge and in a "sexy" up-do (which apparently just means "crazy and all over the place").  My face was slathered in thick, non-pore-friendly foundation.  My eyes were done with the whole "smoky" look.  She slapped a little blush and no lip-color on me, which I thought looked completely bizarre.  Oh well.  Overall a fun experience.  Good people.

That's all I can think of for now, I guess.

     to my dvd collection:

    Brokeback Mountain
    O
    Dracula
    Monster's Ball
    Far and Away
    Gladiator
    Terminator 2
    Terms of Endearment
    The Chumscrubber

I'm shooting a short on March 12th.  It's a night shoot.  Director called to ask me about my skin tone so the makeup artist would know what she needs for me.  Cool, huh?

    Upcoming class scenes:

    Sex, Lies, and Videotape
    Pulp Fiction
    Moscow on the Hudson
    Reds
    Seven

This phenomenal guy who left class to take care of some personal things just returned last week.  THRILLED to have him back.  He's a fellow O'Connor and Vonnegut fan, and we've had some fantastic discussions already.  He's also one of about ten people I know (you guys included) that have seen and understood the greatness of "Withnail and I".  He and I are going to adapt the final scene from "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and perform that in class, with him playing the Misfit and me playing a young version of the grandmother.  I.  Am.  Excited.

"She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life."

Yesterday was productive.  Spent it in Hollywood.

    9:30am: exec meeting

10am: breakfast with Connie and 'Heem

11:30am: rehearse and converse with Kat

    2:30pm: late lunch with Troy

4:00pm: brainstorming session with the boys

5:30pm: audition for a samurai movie over at sunset gower

    7pm: class

    11:30pm: further brainstorming/discussion with Troy

    1:30am: bed

Feels good to be productive.  The audition was fun.  Would love to be in a samurai movie.  And I'd never been to Sunset Gower before, so that was neat.

In other news, Troy and a girl from their class are starting their own production company.  Everything will be legally set up and ready to go by next week.

In other news x3, I haven't had any caffeine since approximately 7pm on Tuesday, January 29th.  Still drinking a ton of water, and I feel great.  Lost some weight, and my skin's clearing up.  Neat.

I find the success of my classmates both inspiring and challenging.  Seriously.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2340071/ did a short film yesterday with http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0221046/.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2735044/ joined our class last night.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2811852/ started shooting General Hospital a couple weeks ago.

    Cool, huh?

    11:10 am
Waking up at 5am is cool.

At first light this morning I looked out the kitchen window to discover that both the donkey and the horse had taken it upon themselves to exit the corral and visit the front yard.  She was grazing quite placidly next to the cement slab that passes for my patio, and he was standing in the middle of the yard, looking around.  That's all he ever does when he escapes: stand there and look around as though he's not quite sure where he is.

The fact that two large animals, one of which is deaf and half-blind, have become escape artists continues to amuse me.
